Timothée VergneDVM, MsC, PhD, Dipl. ECVPH
Associate Professor in Veterinary Public Health Head of the Epidesa group [email protected] X | BlueSky | LinkedIn |
BiographyTim graduated from the National Veterinary School of Toulouse in 2009. After having completed a Master of Science on Epidemiology and Animal Health, he undertook a PhD (2009-2012) at the University of Paris XI on the use of capture-recapture methods for evaluating quantitatively animal health surveillance systems. He then moved to the Royal Veterinary College (London, United Kingdom, 2012-2016) to study the transmission of infectious diseases, including African swine fever, highly pathogenic avian influenza, bovine tuberculosis and foot-and-mouth disease under the supervision of Prof. Dirk Pfeiffer. In 2016, he joined the Institute of Research for Development (Montpellier, France) to unravel the spatial spread of the chikungunya virus during the unprecented epidemic in the Martinique Island. Since 01 January 2018, Tim is an associate professor of veterinary public health at the National Veterinary School of Toulouse, and leads the Epidesa group.

Research interestsTim's primary research interests include the understanding of detection and transmission processes of infectious diseases of humans and animals using statistical and mathematical modelling tools, in order to optimize the way infectious diseases are managed. During the past few years, he examined the spread of African swine fever in various contexts, contributed to the development of innovative surveillance strategies for animal health, characterised the role of free-grazing ducks in the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in Southeast Asia, studied surveillance strategies for HPAI in live-bird markets in Asia and unravelled the transmission dynamic of bovine tuberculosis in UK badger populations. Currently, his main focus is on the transmission of highly pathogenic avian influenza for which he develops mathematical models to improve our understanding of its transmission and of the way we can better prevent and control it. Since 2022, he is an active member of the working group on African swine fever at the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).

TeachingAt undergraduate level, Tim teaches health legislation, notifiable infectious diseases of animals and how to monitor and control them. Tim is responsible for the master programme GIZMAT where he teaches advanced epidemiology (including infectious disease modelling). Tim is also involved in the organisation of the official course that all veterinary practitioners need to attend should they want to obtain their sanitairy certification and contribute to the fight against notifiable diseases (vaccination, prophylaxis, culling, etc.). Finally, as part of an online course on Veterinary Public Health coordinated by the National School of Veterinary Services, Tim is responsible for an online module dedicated to epidemiological surveillance.
